West Ham sources tell journalist who broke Lucas Paqueta transfer whether West Ham United will sign Tottenham centre-back Eric Dier in January.

Tottenham defender Eric Dier has emerged as a surprise target for West Ham in the January transfer window, and we apparently could even pick him up on a free transfer.

The 29-year-old is well out of favour with Ange Postecoglou, and has played just four games for Spurs this season, and has only 198 minutes of action in total to his name (Transfermarkt).

With Hammers boss David Moyes on the hunt for a new central defender, it’s easy to see why Dier has been linked with a move to the London Stadium.

However, Dier is the not the man we need at West Ham, I’m convinced of it.

And it seems as though there isn’t actually any concrete interest in the 49-capped England international anyway…

Eric Dier to West Ham update

Ben Jacobs – the man who was first to break our interest in signing Lucas Paqueta in 2022 – has provided an update on the Hammers’ apparent interest in signing Dier.

And Jacobs told Last Word on Spurs that there is, in fact, no interest from West Ham in signing the Tottenham defender this winter:

“Eric Dier is free to leave, it’s as simple as that, Tottenham are thinking about getting the salary off the books, that’s the concern there. There have been West Ham links and I don’t want to pour cold water on them, but they have been downplayed by sources close to West Ham, but the interest is legitimate enough. The other interesting bit of information I received a couple of days ago is that Luton Town could be one of the clubs taking a look as well, so keep an eye on that one, you’ve heard that first here.”

There you have it. I couldn’t see this one happening from the start, and now Jacobs has almost confirmed that we won’t be signing him.

Dier has regressed badly for Spurs over the past 12 months or so, and there’s obviously a reason why they want to get rid of him so badly.

West Ham will better off without Eric Dier – there are plenty of better options out there for Moyes to explore this month, including the likes of Jonathan Tah and Dan-Axel Zagadou.

Hopefully the Scot makes the correct decision in January.
