West Ham insider and Claret and Hugh writer Sean Whetstone has delivered his verdict on a potential return for Dimitri Payet.
Most Hammers fans yearn for the days of Dimitri – he was a truly special player for us.
Payet was absolutely outstanding during his 18 month spell with the Hammers.
The now 35-year-old was an instant hit at West Ham. During 59 games for the Hammers, Payet racked up 15 goals and 22 assists (Transfermarkt).
He lit up Upton Park and the London Stadium with numerous displays of magical genius.
Payet left West Ham to return to Marseille in January 2017 for around £25 million (BBC), however, after falling out with Hammers boss at the time Slaven Bilic.
It was an acrimonious exit with many West Ham fans feeling incredibly bitter towards the Frenchman. Much time has passed now though and people are starting to understand why he left.
The Hammers board failed to show any ambition by backing Slaven Bilic in the transfer market and as a result, Payet wanted to ply his trade elsewhere. Fair enough.
It’s almost like water under the bridge now, and rumours have been going around like wildfire that West Ham could make a move to bring the talented Frenchman back to the London Stadium this summer…
West Ham insider delivers Dimitri Payet verdict
Hammers insider Sean Whetstone has poured cold water on talk of the 35-year-old making a return to East London this summer:
We wouldn’t be against Payet returning.
We must say though, there are definitely better options out there for David Moyes this summer.
Dimitri Payet gave us some tremendously exciting moments during his 18-month spell with West Ham.
He is 35 now though and keeping up with the intense pace of Premier League action Amy well be impossible for him.
Time to move on, for all parties concerned…
