West Ham handed major Piero Hincapie boost as South America’s best young defender could be up for grabs in January

West Ham United could well have a chance of signing Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen in January.

Piero Hincapie is one of the best young central defenders on the planet, and has been chased by West Ham for a while now – it was claimed towards the end of the summer transfer window that we could beat Liverpool to his signature.

Fussball Transfers also suggested that Tim Steidten is a big fan of Hincapie, so it would be no surprise at all if the German works his magic in the transfer market once again.

Hammers boss David Moyes definitely needs to sign a new central defender, with Angelo Ogbonna set to turn 36 before the end of the season, Kurt Zouma continuing to struggle with injuries and the jury seemingly still out on Nayef Aguerd, after a succession of high-profile blunders.

What a signing the 21-year-old Leverkusen ace would be for West Ham, and it now seems like we may have a good chance to sign him if we make a bid for his services…

West Ham must move in for Piero Hincapie

According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, the 21-year-old defender wants to leave Leverkusen due to a lack of first-team action this season.

It is suggested that Liverpool are monitoring his situation but haven’t made an offer for him as yet. So the door is wide open for West Ham to make our move.

The Hammers can’t afford to miss out here – Hincapie is an elite young defender and he’d be absoltuely brilliant for us.

The wonderkid has been dubbed as South America’s best young defender (Goal), and it’s easy to see why.

He is a centre-back by trade, but can also operate at left-back if need be.

Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso raved about the Ecuadorian defender recently, when speaking to the Bundesliga club’s official website:

“I think he’s a very modern defender. He can play in different positions. He’s served us as a full-back in recent games, but has also been the left centre-back when we’ve played with a back three. He’s aggressive, is making better decisions when he has the ball, backs himself more to play diagonal passes and get in behind. It motivates me to have a player with his potential and desire because he helps you and you help him. He’s a great player.”

In 30 Bundesliga outings last season, Hincapie averaged 1.7 tackles, one interception, 2.5 clearances and two successful aerial duels per game (Who Scored). During those appearances, the Ecuadorian made 55.7 passes on average per match and recorded a completion rate of 83.2% (Who Scored).

The 21-year-old has only made two Bundesliga starts this season though, so it’s easy to see why he might want out in January.

Piero Hincapie is superb with the ball at his feet and I think he’d be a massive signing for West Ham – a really big statement move from the club, and of course the perfect replacement for Angelo Ogbonna.
