West Ham could replace Nayef Aguerd with two players from the Bundesliga in January

West Ham United are said to be eyeing up two specific players to replace Nayef Aguerd in the January transfer window.

Nayef Aguerd has missed the last few games for West Ham due to illness, and he has already been linked with a move to Lyon this winter.

Hammers boss David Moyes signed the 27-year-old from Rennes in the summer of 2022 for around £28 million (The Daily Mail).

Aguerd has looked very decent indeed at times, but he has also proven to be extremely error prone. His recovery pace is hugely impressive, but his rash decision making and poor positional awareness have both cost us on numerous occasions this season.

The worst performances from him this term have come against Bournemouth, Chelsea, Liverpool and Fulham. The really concerning thing is that opposing teams now seem to be targeting him.

The Morocco international’s partnership with Kurt Zouma has been a really fragile one, and we’ve actually looked far more solid without the former Rennes man over the past three games.

It now seems like Moyes could be looking to make a big upgrade in the central defensive department…

Nayef Aguerd could be replaced by two players at West Ham

According to Football Insider, Hammers boss David Moyes is eyeing moves for Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart centre-backs Jonathan Tah and Dan-Axel Zagadou to potentially replace Aguerd.

The 27-year-old is due to head off to AFCON imminently with Morocco, but it seems as though he could be sold next month as well.

If we allowed the former Rennes ace to leave and signed Tah, 27, and Zagadou, 24, I think it would be great business from the club.

Both players are elite centre-backs and are absolute giants, standing at 6ft 5in and 6ft 6in respectively.

Neither of them have the pace that Aguerd does, nor are they as comfortable with the ball at their feet as the Moroccan is but all around, they’re far better defenders.

Whether Leverkusen or Stuttgart are willing to offload any of their players midway through the season is unlikely in my view. So this one may have to wait until the summer.

And when the end of the season comes around, it wouldn’t surprise me one little bit if West Ham decide to cash in on Nayef Aguerd.
