David Moyes has sent a touching message to Jesse Lingard as he returns to West Ham United with Manchester United.
Lingard will likely be on the bench as Man United come to the London Stadium which he lit up during a magical six-month loan spell last season.
West Ham fans were desperate to see Lingard return on a permanent basis in the summer.
Fans disappointed Lingard did not push to continue West Ham adventure
But he elected to remain at Man United where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had insisted he was part of his plans.
Lingard scored in Man United’s 4-1 win over Newcastle last weekend. But he has been trolled mercilessly after gifting Young Boys a last minute victory over the Red Devils in the Champions League in midweek.
The 28-year-old is assured a rapturous reception on his return to east London.
He enjoyed a brilliant relationship with West Ham boss Moyes. And Lingard said ahead of the game that Moyes and West Ham gave him the freedom and platform to reignite his career.
Moyes sends touching message to Lingard ahead of West Ham reunion
Now Moyes has sent Lingard a touching message on his return to West Ham with the Red Devils.
“We really enjoyed having him,” Moyes said in his pre-match press briefing.
“I hope that in many ways Jesse will look back well at the time he had here and how well the players treated him and made him feel welcome.
“He was great for us.”
Solskjaer hopes Lingard will kill off Hammers hopes
Some West Ham fans still hold out hope Lingard may join them in January if it becomes clear he isn’t getting the regular game time he craves – and needs – to stay in the England picture.
Particularly after he reportedly snubbed a new contract at Man United recently.
But Man United boss Solskjaer insisted ahead of the game that he wants – and hopes – Lingard will sign a new deal at Old Trafford, saying he is ‘a red through and through’.
“He’s got this season left of his contract,” Solskjaer confirmed (as reported on Sky Sports News around 2.30pm on Thursday September 16th).
“Of course the club is talking to him and his dad and we see him as a Man United player in the future as well.
“Jesse has come back into us after a great spell at West Ham – he showed his qualities, he’s back in the England squad, he scores goals for England and we really want to see the best of Jesse this season.
“And we hope to see him, we support him and we want to keep him here with us, he’s a red through and through.”
