West Ham badge will be restored to its former glory ahead of the Sheffield United clash after a push from fans.

West Ham welcome Sheffield United to the London Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday.

And ahead of the match there is some big news about the club’s beloved badge.

Because it’s official, it’s coming home.

Not football but the giant West Ham crest which used to adorn The Bobby Moore stand at Upton Park.

The badge looked set to be sold to an overseas buyer after the West Ham board passed up the chance to buy it back for just £9k.

How an important piece of Hammers history was saved

The historic badge was discovered mothballing in storage over two years ago.

Supporter group Hammers United stepped in and – after months of negotiations, crowdfunding and contributions from key individuals – the badge was saved from the clutches of an overseas buyer.

West Ham fans had been deliberating over what to do with the badge. The crest has become somewhat symbolic given that a large section of West Ham fans dislike the club’s new badge.

Hammers United announced back in August 2021 that the giant crest would be restored to its former glory and mounted on the club’s historic supporters club behind what was the Southbank/Bobby Moore stand at Upton Park.

Now, over two years on, that is finally set to happen this weekend.

A lorry is scheduled to transport the crest to Upton Park today (Tuesday) with a crane also booked to lift it into place.

And the plan is to have an official unveiling by club legend and former academy director Tony Carr at noon ahead of the Sheffield United clash on Saturday.

Speaking to Hammers News on behalf of Hammers United, Paul Colborne said it shows what is possible when the West Ham family comes together.

Hammers legend Tony Carr set to unveil giant West Ham crest ahead of Sheffield United match

“This is a real achievement by the West Ham family and shows what can be achieved by a determined fans group backed by the fans,” Colborne told Hammers News.

“Hammers United brought things together but it was the West Ham family that raised the money and in many cases gave their services free of charge.

“The final assessment will thank so many, but Hammers United must particularly thank Sean Burke, UK Fitness and WHU Supporters Club for their help and support.

“The specialist fittings are up, the lorry booked to transport the crest to Upton Park and the crane booked for Tuesday.

“We are honoured to have Tony Carr unveiling at noon this coming Saturday (30th). We will then be giving out commemorative t-shirts, courtesy of Steve Lowley, before adjourning to the Boleyn for a pint before watching the match.

“Long Live West Ham.”
