Tim Steidten has spoken out and says his signing Edson Alvarez is now West Ham’s key player – an opinion shared by many fans.

When West Ham signed Kalvin Phillips on loan from Man City last month, many believed it would be bad news for Tomas Soucek or James Ward-Prowse.

And that tells you everything you need to know about how highly regarded Edson Alvarez is in east London.

Last week The Mirror journalist James Nursey made a baffling claim that he had been told David Moyes has signed Phillips to start ahead of El Machin in the Hammers midfield.

Hammers News called out that claim for what it was – utterly laughable.

Steidten says Alvarez is now West Ham’s key player

Alvarez is widely regarded as – arguably – the team’s most important player.

And West Ham’s performances and results without him support that argument.

Although as far as West Ham technical director Tim Steidten is concerned, there is no argument to be had.

The German was hailed for overseeing a superb summer window. The crowning glory of which was sealing deals for Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus for a combined £72 from Ajax.

Now Steidten has spoken out and says his signing Alvarez is now West Ham’s key player.

‘I beat slow Dortmund to Alvarez’ says Steidten

And he has revealed he helped the Hammers beat Borussia Dortmund to the Mexican’s signature.

“He has a very big influence on our (West Ham’s) game,” Steidten said of Alvarez in an interview with Sky Sports Germany, as reported by Florian Plettenberg.

“I am very happy that Dortmund may have been a bit slow and I had the chance to get him.

“I have also known him for a very long time.

“He is a super important player for us. He is a leader. An absolute leadership figure. He is top.”

Steidten is spot on. West Ham fans absolutely love Alvarez already.

El Machin is a Hammer of the Year shout

And he will be in the mix for the clubs’s prestigious Hammer of the Year honour without a doubt.

Not that it particularly matters because we should be West Ham UNITED, but this also puts to bed claims from some quarters that Alvarez was actually identified by Moyes.

Let’s hope Steidten stays at West Ham amid interest from Liverpool and is given money to spend in the summer window.

The signs are good with the Hammers surely prime candidates to spend big as Gary Neville predicts a summer splurge.
