Red Bull model? Yeh right, as David Moyes reportedly wants to sign 30-year-old with 15 league goals this season.

West Ham United will most likely be on the look-out for a new striker in the summer transfer window.

Moyes needs to bring in an upgrade on West Ham forward Michail Antonio, if he is still in charge at the London Stadium of course.

One would imagine that the Hammers boss will be on the look-out for a younger model – someone with huge talent, power, pace and an incredibly high ceiling.

David Moyes has repeatedly insisted that he wants to bring the ‘Red Bull model’ to the London Stadium.

However, his signings haven’t always matched up with that supposed philosophy. And the Scot’s latest transfer target is yet more evidence that he in fact doesn’t want to copy the Red Bull model at West Ham…

David Moyes wants Red Bull model but signings don’t back it up

According to a report from SportBILD, the Hammers want to sign Werder Bremen striker Niclas Fullkrug in the summer.

He has a very decent scoring record in the Bundesliga so far this season, with 15 goals in 23 games to his name (Transfermarkt).

The four-capped Germany international is proven forward and a very good finisher, with 142 career goals to his name (Transfermarkt).

However, he is 30 now. Surely moving to the Premier League from the Bundesliga at that age would be a massive challenge?

Why is Moyes not targeting young and hungry forwards with a real point to prove? That is what he said he wanted to do after all. He hasn’t always lived up to that promise though…

The Scot made eight new signings in the summer transfer window but only two of them were under the age of 24 at the time – Flynn Downes and Gianluca Scamacca.

And then in January, he brought 30-year-old Danny Ings to the London Stadium.

Ralf Rangnick explained a few years ago how RB Leipzig’s policy is to sign nobody over the age of 24 (The Mirror).

And a study by the CIES Football Observatory found the average age of Leipzig’s signings was 21 years and 156 days, making them the youngest recruiter of any club in Europe’s top five leagues (City AM).

So David Moyes either wants to copy the Red Bull model or he doesn’t. There is no in between. He would do himself a favour if he admitted that that is actually not the route that he wants to go down…
