Tijjani Reijnders gave AZ Alkmaar the lead after 42 minutes with a fine strike from 25 yards out.

In my opinion, the Hammers should have been given a free-kick 15 seconds before the ball found the back of our net. However, we still had plenty of time to rectify that and prevent the goal.

Owen Hargreaves hammers Tomas Soucek during West Ham vs AZ Alkmaar clash
The 28-year-old Hammers midfielder was the weak-link for us tonight in my opinion.
And Hargreaves explained how he should have done a lot better for the Dutch side’s goal in the first-half tonight, when speaking on BT Sport (Thursday May 11th, 8:55pm):

“Yeh, he’s got to get out to the ball, Soucek has got to get to him, he’s not really marking anyone. He’s got to get there quick and close him down.”
Signed on a permanent deal for £18 million back in the summer of 2020 (WHUFC.com), Soucek initially looked like a great signing.
However, he has regressed badly over the past two seasons, and put in a really underwhelming performance once again this evening.
If we are to make some real progress over the next few seasons, David Moyes must bring in an upgrade on the Czech Republic international.
Soucek proved during the West Ham vs AZ Alkmaar clash that he’s just not up to it at this level.
