West Ham United centre-back Nayef Aguerd is being targeted by Lyon ahead of the January transfer window.

Nayef Aguerd joined West Ham from Rennes in the summer of 2022 for around £28 million (Daily Mail), and he has impressed and disappointed in equal measure.

Now, according to a report from L’Equipe, the 27-year-old Hammers defender is being targeted by Lyon ahead of the January transfer window opening.

Lyon are eyeing up some proven players this winter in a bid to move away from relegation trouble, and the French side are apparently keen to sign Aguerd’s teammate Said Benrahma as well.

David Moyes is obviously a big fan of the Morocco international, and tried to sign him on numerous occasions before he eventually got a deal over the line.

Could Aguerd really be moved on this winter then? A deal seems to be very unlikely indeed…

Nayef Aguerd linked with West Ham exit

Whilst L’Equipe claim that Lyon want to sign the Moroccan, it is made clear that the French side are aware that a deal to bring him back to Ligue 1 will be very difficult in January.

Whilst Aguerd can be incredibly error-prone at times, his recovery pace does make a huge difference to the way that we play, and it enables us to push higher up the pitch.

When he doesn’t play, we set up much deeper defensively – a move that allows our opponents to come onto us.

As mentioned before though, he is liable to commit errors pretty much every time he plays, so it will be very interesting to see whether Moyes feels he can make an upgrade on the 27-year-old, if Lyon do indeed come knocking for him this winter.

Lyon have real pedigree in France, having won the Ligue 1 title seven times, with all of those coming consecutively from 2001/2002 up until the 2007/2008 campaign.

They are battling near the bottom of the table right now though, and I’m really not sure that Nayef Aguerd would be open to leaving West Ham to join a club in the position that Lyon are.

I don’t believe that Moyes would be open to selling him either, but only time will tell as to whether that’s true or not.
