Manchester United midfielder Sofyan Amrabat is making David Moyes look like an absolute genius

Sofyan Amrabat looked like a fish out of water for Manchester United during their defeat to Manchester City yesterday, and he’s making West Ham boss David Moyes look like a genius.

Manchester United ended up signing Sofyan Amrabat on a season-long loan from Fiorentina in the summer transfer window, after West Ham boss David Moyes had the chance to sign him for the Hammers for around £26 million to replace Declan Rice who had left to join Arsenal.

At the time, bringing the 27-year-old midfielder to the London Stadium for that kind of money seemed like an absolute no-brainer.

I was one of those really pushing for West Ham to sign the Morocco international – he had been brilliant for Fiorentina and ran the game for the Italian side in the Europa Conference League final against us back in June.

Amrabat just seemed like he’d be ideally suited to the Premier League, what with his intelligent spacial awareness, tenacious tackling and seemingly explosive recovery pace. However, it’s turned out that that couldn’t actually be further from the truth…

The Fiorentina owned midfielder has looked well off the pace for Man United this season. He has only played 13 games and 625 minutes of football for the Red Devils (Who Scored), so it’s very clear to see that Erik ten Hag isn’t a big fan of him.

He looks like he’s nowhere near physical enough, nor fit enough, to succeed at the very highest level in the Premier League.

The mistake he made at the Etihad yesterday summed him up, and showed us all exactly why he’s struggled so badly in the Premier League this season.

He dawdled on the ball thinking that he had plenty of time just outside his own penalty area. Perhaps you can do that in Serie A, but not in the Premier League, and Rodri snapped into the Moroccan, dispossessed him and laid off the ball to Erling Haaland to make it 3-1.

Amrabat’s shoulders slumped as he realised thow costly his mistake was, and there was almost a recognition from him and a submission that he’s quite simply not cut-out for the Premier League.

This time last year, he was being absolutely raved about in the press as the perfect Rice heir at West Ham. Much to everyone’s annoyance though, Sofyan Amrabat joined Manchester United instead.

And incredibly, that now seems like a really lucky escape for the Hammers. I would be absolutely shocked if Ten Hag signs Amrabat on a permanent deal in the summer, and the midfielder’s struggles this season proves that sometimes we just have to trust Moyes to make the correct decision when it comes to potential incomings.
