Major Scott McTominay to West Ham update – ‘Cryptically been told’

West Ham United have been linked with a move to sign Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay for quite some time now.

Manchester United star Scott McTominay was chased for three years by former West Ham boss David Moyes, and now current Hammers head coach Julen Lopetegui is trying to succeed where his predecessor failed.

West Ham are reported to be battling Galatasaray for the 27-year-old Man United midfielder’s signature this summer.

Lopetegui has begun his tenure at the London Stadium with the clear intent of strengthening his squad beyond all recognition.

The Hammers chief has already signed three new players – Luis Guilherme, Wes Foderingham and Max Kilman.

It’s been said that he wants to make at least six new signings this summer, so that means there will be a minimum of three more new arrivals at the London Stadium.

We all know that Lopetegui needs to sign a new striker and a natural left winger as a matter of urgency.

That said, I firmly believe that the need for a new central midfielder is being somewhat underplayed.

So what’s the deal with our interest in McTominay? Does Lopetegui really want him or not?

Major Scott McTominay to West Ham update

The Scotland international is a proven Premier League midfielder, so it’s easy to see why the Hammers might want to sign him this summer.

He’d be the ideal accompaniment to Edson Alvarez and Lucas Paqueta in the West Ham engine room.

McTominay is incredibly strong in the tackle, quick along the ground and possesses bundles of energy and athleticism.

His never say die attitude, alongside the battle-hardened Alvarez, would make us a real problem to play against.

So will Lopetegui really have an interest in bringing the Scot to the London Stadium?

Hammers insiders Claret and Hugh have provided a big update on the situation.

“Many thought our interest in McTominay ended with the Scotsman’s departure. That much was confirmed to C&H earlier by someone at club level who was involved in last seasons negotiations.”

However, here’s where it gets interesting…

“Even if the Hammers were to hold an interest in McTominay, his £40 million valuation mentioned by United would be completely prohibitive.”

“Although cryptically, C&H have been told by a West Ham source within the last hour that it’s unlikely Man U would sell the player who the club insider described as a ‘good player’.

That last paragraph is the one that jumps out to me. How would the insider know that it’s unlikely that Manchester United would sell Scott McTominay to West Ham in the first place?

I’m choosing to read between the lines here. I believe that the Hammers are in fact keen on signing the 27-year-old midfielder.

However, his £40 million asking price is just too rich for us right now. It will be really interesting to see what happens if Man United lower those demands to around the £25 million mark.

Either way, the Scott McTominay to West Ham transfer saga is one to keep a close eye on this summer.
