West Ham were linked with a move to sign Alfie Mawson back in the summer of 2018. However, the centre-back ended up joining Fulham instead.

And the Hammers went on to sign Issa Diop who coincidentally is now at Fulham himself!
Things haven’t worked out too well for Diop over the past five years, but it has been even worse for Mawson…
Alfie Mawson forced to retire at just 29
After his £20 million move to Fulham (talkSPORT), Mawson made 52 appearances in all competitions for the Cottagers (Transfermarkt).
He spent the 2020/21 season on loan with Bristol City before joining Wycombe Wanderers on a free transfer in the summer of 2022.
He made 21 appearances for Wycombe this season before succumbing to a knee injury, and now Mawson has called it a day.
That’s terribly sad new for him, especially considering the fact that he is only 29!
He was a top-class centre-back in his day, and was actually in contention for the England squad at one point.

The 29-year-old only missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s 2018 World Cup squad because he was forced to undergo knee surgery (The Evening Standard).
The world was Mawson’s oyster five years ago, and what has happened since then proves that nobody can take things for granted, especially not Premier League footballers.
Alfie Mawson was a top-class centre-back in his day. I actually really wanted him to move to the London Stadium back in 2018.
It really must be an incredibly tough time for Mawson, and making the decision to retire at 29 must not be taken lightly. Here at Hammers News we wish the 29-year-old all the best for the future.
