West Ham’s training ground is a running joke among fans.

The Hammers’s training facilities – at both Rush Green and the former base at Chadwell Heath – have long been criticised by Hammers fans, past players and managers.

West Ham training facilities have been a running joke among fans

At Chadwell Heath players who complained were famously told by long-serving club staff ‘It was good enough for Bobby Moore’.

The latest to criticise West Ham’s training facilities was former striker Jordan Hugill. He told Norwich staff their facilities were better than West Ham’s – read the full story here.

But with rival Premier League clubs – including the likes of Tottenham, Brighton, Leicester and Burnley – investing tens of millions into state-of-the-art training grounds, West Ham fans are concerned they will soon be facing an even more difficult task to compete for players.

West Ham fans have a long list of grievances against the club’s owners David Sullivan and David Gold but the training facilities are near the top.

Hammers supporters have long been ashamed of the club’s training ground.

Legend Dicks says fans have it wrong and Rush Green facilities are ‘incredible’

But West Ham legend Julian ‘the Terminator’ has terminated talk the club’s facilities are not up to scratch. The Hammers fan favourite has told The West Ham Way Extra Time podcast that fans have got it wrong.

Julian was assistant manager to Slaven Bilic between 2015 and 2017 and claims the Rush Green facilities are brilliant.

“When we were there we went from Chadwell Heath to Rush Green and to me Chadwell Heath was like Upton Park, I think it’s a fantastic place,” Julian told TWHW Extra Time podcast.

“Rush Green was another level, the pitches were superb and stuff like that…

“The training facilities when I went to West Ham at Chadwell Heath were f-ing awful. They were just horrendous, the pitches were just full of mud in winter. Now they’re superb all year round.

‘The training facilities are so much better now’

“Rush Green was even better. The pitches they have like Desso in them now, they’re even better…

“For me, from an ex player, (at) Chadwell Heath we had a gym that was probably 20×20, it was horrendous….

“But now the gym at Rush Green, it’s incredible. It’s got everything you want in there, it’s huge. The facilities are so much better now, so much better.”

Drastically improved training facilities were one of the key improvements West Ham fans want to see according to a recent supporter survey.

So far during his tenure David Moyes has not made an issue of the training facilities at his disposal.

And the Scot has been very public on the elements of the club that need to drastically improve, including scouting and recruitment.

It’s clear from images alone West Ham’s facilities do not compete with many other Premier League clubs. But whether that means they are not up to Premier League standard is another argument entirely and Julian seems to think they are.
