A leading salary website claims star Lucas Paqueta is the highest paid player in West Ham history but he’s worth every penny.

West Ham’s increased spending levels since moving to the London Stadium has also resulted in bigger contracts for players.

Mexican striker Javier Hernandez became West Ham’s highest paid player ever when he signed from Bayer Leverkusen.

The forward signed a deal worth £145k per week. He scored 17 goals in 63 games in just over two years at West Ham before being sold to Sevilla.

That worked out at around a whopping £825k per goal.

There have been other big earners at West Ham.

Mexican striker has been replaced as West Ham’s highest ever earner

Andriy Yarmolenko was getting £115k per week while the likes of Jack Wilshere, Marko Arnautovic, Kurt Zouma, Alphonse Areola and a host of others had contracts over the £100k per week mark.

The Hammers tried to make Declan Rice comfortably their best paid player. The captain was offered a deal said to be worth £200k per week – a whopping £83m over the course of the proposed deal.

But the skipper turned it down as he prepares to leave in pursuit of Champions League football and top trophies this summer.

It appears the club now have a new name at the top of the earning charts.

Spotrac is the world’s largest and leading online sports team and player contract resource.

Brazilian midfielder Paqueta is emerging as the star everyone hoped he would be after a difficult period of adjustment to the power and pace of the Premier League.

And Spotrac has updated its West Ham section to state Paqueta is earning £150k per week at the London Stadium.

Brazilian magnifico has played his part keeping Hammers on the Premier League gravy train

That means the 25-year-old is getting a cool £7.8m a year at West Ham.

In the modern game, that is the kind of salary a player like Paqueta would expect to earn.

Of late Paqueta has more than played his part in helping keep West Ham on the Premier League gravy train. And that is worth hundreds of millions to the club.

If the Brazilian magnifico can help the Hammers end a 43-year major trophy drought too his wages will start to look like a bargain.
