The 1988–89 season is the only campaign both West Ham and Millwall have been in the top division of English football at the same time.
And with the Hammers establishing themselves as one of the core Premier League clubs bar a couple of relegations over the last 30 years, that statistic has remained unchallenged.

But forget being in the same division. An absolutely unthinkable West Ham and Millwall switch had been on the cards as the Lions chased promotion via the play-offs while the Hammers battled relegation.
West Ham beat Manchester United 1-0 to unofficially secure Premier League survival on Sunday night.
And Millwall looked like they were set to seal a play-off spot for promotion to join their arch rivals in the top flight when they found themselves 3-1 up at home to Blackburn on the final day of the Championship season.
But Blackburn launched a stunning comeback to win 4-3. Ironically it was former longstanding West Ham target Ben Brereton-Diaz who scored a brace to end Millwall’s Premier League dream.

And they rubbed salt in the wounds with a West Ham twist.

Rovers belted out the famous Hammers chant at the Den and it could be heard on live coverage.

Millwall’s promotion chase had raised a tantalising prospect of West Ham vs Millwall derbies in the top flight of English football for the first time in what would have been 36 years.
But that will not be happening now following Millwall’s last day collapse.
The Met Police are probably quite thankful that West Ham and Millwall will not be in the same division so intense is the rivalry.
