Star Lucas Paqueta says West Ham fans are the best he’s ever played for after being amazed by their support despite a poor season.

The excitement was palpable at West Ham when the club signed Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paqueta from Lyon in the summer.

West Ham splashed out a club record £51m to bring the former AC Milan and Flamengo ace to the London Stadium.

Hammers fans have been calling Paqueta their ‘Brazilian magnifico’ ever since he arrived at the club.

But the truth is until more recently he had struggled to live up to that moniker.

Paqueta has been one of West Ham’s best players of late, though. Indeed he was one of the best players on the pitch in the defeat to Man City in midweek.

There is no hiding it has been a poor season for West Ham in the Premier League.

The club are still looking for one more point or win to seal survival.

Despite his and the team’s struggles this season, though, West Ham fans have stuck by the team home and away over land and sea.

That backing has certainly impressed their marquee summer signing.

‘I’m so happy to be at a club with a fanbase like this one’

“I have never felt support like this at any other club,” Paqueta told West Ham’s website.

“At other clubs the fans have not been as loyal – our fans are always behind us, supporting us.

“I’m so happy to be at a club with a fanbase like this one.

“I have more confidence in every game, improving and growing as a player. I feel very good on the pitch regardless of the results. (And) I want to finish the season in the best way possible so we can reach our objective which is to stay in the Premier League.”

That is lofty praise for the Hammers faithful given Paqueta has played for Flamengo, Milan and Lyon – all of whom have passionate fanbases.

Let’s hope that fan loyalty is rewarded with a first major trophy for 43 years in the next month.
