Kudus thinks he knows exactly why Kalvin Phillips was so poor for West Ham vs Bournemouth

Mohammed Kudus has just launched a staunch defence of his West Ham United teammate Kalvin Phillips.

Kalvin Phillips made his debut for West Ham against Bournemouth last night, but things didn’t exactly go to plan for the midfielder.

I believe that Kurt Zouma was to blame for the goal that the Hammers conceded but aside from that, Phillips put in a poor performance in general.

Despite the fact that the 28-year-old hadn’t started a Premier League game since May before last night, David Moyes threw him straight into his starting XI.

With hindsight, the Scot will surely now admit that that was a big mistake. Phillips was miles off the pace of the game, and was really worried me is that he looked like he was hiding after Bournemouth’s goal.

Again, I really don’t think the goal we conceded was his fault – that was on Zouma – it was his display after the incident that concerned me though.

That said, I have no doubts that he’ll come good for us. He just needs time to adapt to our system and to get to know his teammates – something that Mohammed Kudus has alluded to…

Kalvin Phillips was so poor for West Ham vs Bournemouth

Kudus has spoken to WHUFC.com and the Manchester City owned midfielder’s debut for the Hammers last night.

And the Ghanaian suggested that Phillips just needs to be given time to settle into life at the London Stadium:

“I’m not disappointed for [Kalvin] because we know the kind of player he is and the quality that he has. When you come into a new team, it can take some time to get used to everybody. I believe in him so much and we have no doubts about his quality at all. In the next game, he will show even more and we will all understand each other that little bit more too.”

Too right I say. Phillips was really bad last night, there is no sugar-coating that.

However, he clearly isn’t match fit, and once he gets back to his best physically, I have no doubts that he’ll be a great player for us.

The other thing is that the 28-year-old needs to given time to adjust to Moyes’s tactics and training sessions – they must be like chalk and cheese from Pep Guardiola’s!

Kalvin Phillips will go on to be a success for West Ham, I’m sure of it. We just all need to support him and as much as we can right now.
