Judgement day for Lucas Paqueta is upon us with betting charges ruling expected later today

So today could well be the day when the fate of West Ham United forward Lucas Paqueta could be sealed, after recent betting charges.

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta faces an uncertain future in the game, after it emerged a couple of weeks ago that he was being charged for potential betting breaches.

The accusations levelled against Paqueta – which he vehemently denies – could result in a lengthy ban, and the Hammers hierarchy reportedly fear that his career could actually be finished if he is indeed proven guilty.

The news about the potential betting breaches first emerged in the summer of 2023, and it actually scuppered the Brazilian’s potential transfer to Manchester City.

The investigation into Paqueta’s alleged betting breaches rumbled on for nearly a year before he was officially charged on four separate counts back on May 23rd (FA’s official website).

It was recently suggested that he could face a multi-year ban if found guilty, and that would obviously be an absolutely terrible outcome for both him and his club.

Either way, I think the player and the club just want the situation to be resolved now. The good news is that he is currently away with the Brazil national team preparing for the Copa America.

That said, the betting breaches enquiry will surely still be weighing heavily on his mind.

And whilst the FA’s enquiry is moving along at a snail’s pace, things are picking up speed out in Paqueta’s homeland…

Lucas Paqueta betting charges ruling expected today

Whilst we may not know the outcome of the FA enquiry into the Hammers ace for a while, today could well be judgement day for Lucas out in Brazil.

The West Ham midfielder may well be sweating more than usual when he wakes up this morning.

That’s because Brazilian senator Jorge Kajuru is set to meet today with other members of the ‘The Parliamentary Inquiry Commission’ to discuss Paqueta’s future.

The enquiry out in Brazil is entirely separate from the FA’s investigation into the 26-year-old Hammers star.

However, if things don’t go well in the meeting out in Brazil today, it could well be curtains for Paqueta. After all, Kajaru is the man who was calling for the West Ham star to be banned for life back in September 2023.

The CPI certainly have the power to decide what happens to the former Lyon man in the future. They had enough influence to get the Brazilian league suspended for a while whilst they conducted a proper investigation into potential match-fixing (Games Magazine Brasil).

All we can do is hope that the outcome is a good one for Paqueta, and West Ham of course. A ruling that would see him banned for a number of years would be nothing less than an unmitigated disaster for the club.

I think what will end up happening is that the Brazilian and English authorities will most likely come to the same conclusion regarding the betting charges levelled at Lucas Paqueta.

I’m just praying that the outcome is a positive one for the Brazilian star.
