West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen’s links to Newcastle are an interesting subplot ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match.

The Hammers will travel to St. James’ Park knowing that three points will lift them out of the relegation zone.

This would put Tottenham under even more pressure in their London derby against Chelsea on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Bowen’s future at West Ham will also come into focus against Newcastle, given their longstanding interest.

Jarrod Bowen could finally join Newcastle after failed 2020 transfer

West Ham are not only playing for Premier League survival but also for the chance to keep their best players, such as Jarrod Bowen.

Bowen would be expected to finally leave the Hammers this summer if they are relegated to the Championship.

Newcastle are among the several interested teams, six years after they almost signed him before he joined West Ham.

Bowen revealed in 2023 that he thought his move from Hull to Newcastle was “nailed on” before West Ham swooped in.

“So it was deadline day, and I had nothing,” he explained. “I thought I was going to Newcastle because Steve Bruce was there.

Where does the skipper rank among our biggest Premier League LEGENDS?

Jarrod Bowen of West Ham United celebrates opening the scoring during the Premier League match between Chelsea and West Ham United at Stamford Bridge on January 31, 2026 in London, England.

“I was looking for houses and everything, I thought it was nailed on. They said they’re not paying the money, and I thought I would stay at Hull.

“It was £14m with £6m in add-ons, and one of those was for an England call-up, and I thought that would never happen.

“I went to training and thought I was staying at Hull, but the manager pulled me and said, ‘What are you doing here? We’ve accepted a bid from West Ham.’ I didn’t even know they were interested.”

Eddie Howe’s side are now looking to bring Bowen to St. James’ Park as a replacement for Bayern Munich-linked Anthony Gordon.

West Ham would probably need to go down for this to happen, which gives Newcastle extra motivation to win the game.

So, while the focus remains on the Premier League relegation battle, Bowen’s future could also be at stake on Sunday.
