Jamie Carragher shared his thoughts when asked whether West Ham United can finish inside the top five in the Premier League table this season.
Fifth spot could be enough to qualify for next season’s Champions League, and Jamie Carragher was put on the spot yesterday about West Ham United’s chances of reaching the promised land of Europe’s premier competition.
The Champions League is a competition that the Hammers have been so close to qualifying for in recent years, namely the 2020/21 season when one more win would have got the job done, and then in the 2015/16 season under Slaven Bilic when we missed out by just four points.

This term, there are so many top quality teams inside the top half of the Premier League table, and David Moyes will be fully aware that finishing in fifth spot or higher will be far from easy.
Carragher highlighted exactly that yesterday…
Carragher’s 14-word response when asked if West Ham can qualify for the Champions League
Before yesterday’s game, Carragher was doing his usual pre-match punditry whilst pitch-side at Villa Park.
And he responded when asked by Sky Sports colleague Dave Jones whether West Ham can crack the top five this season, (Sunday October 22nd, 3:58pm):

“I mean it is an ambition but I think it will be really tough.”
I have to agree with Carragher. Moyes has a very good squad of players at the London Stadium, but yesterday’s 4-1 defeat was a real wake-up call for us.
Another point worth noting is that if we are to make a push for the top five, Moyes most probably has to change his style when we’re playing top-half teams away from home. Sitting back and soaking up pressure is just not cutting the mustard.
Qualifying for the Champions League should always be an ambition for West Ham United.
I just feel like we’re one or two players short from being able to do so right now. And I’m not sure that the system deployed by Moyes is good enough for us to upset the apple cart by gatecrashing the top five.
