Jamie Carragher says West Ham fans can’t have their cake and eat it with David Moyes amid grumbles over approach.

Many outside West Ham simply cannot believe there are question marks over the future of David Moyes.

And it’s easy to see why given what Moyes has achieved since returning to the club four years ago.

West Ham have finished sixth, seventh and are currently eighth under Moyes after a poor Premier League season last term.

That was redeemed by the club winning its first trophy in 43 years, though, of course.

West Ham have also made the last 16 of the European football again for the third consecutive season.

But there is no hiding the fact that there are a large section of West Ham fans who want a more modern, progressive and attack-minded manager to succeed the Scot when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Many Hammers supporters thought Moyes had woken up and smelled the coffee regarding the team’s approach when they put the 5-0 Fulham drubbing behind them with impressive performances in wins over Freiburg and Wolves that had style and substance.

The manager angered fans when he selected a weakened team in the Carabao Cup quarter-final at Liverpool. And when it resulted in another negative approach and 5-1 thumping, it only served to heighten the frustration.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher always speaks well on West Ham. He’s knowledgeable about the club and respects its traditions and fanbase.

But Carragher says West Ham fans can’t have their cake and eat it with Moyes.

Addressing the grumbles over style, Carragher said he understands it but has called for realism.

“About David Moyes, listen the only slight frustration for West Ham maybe – certainly when they look at some of the players they’ve got in the squad like (Mohammed) Kudus, who’s new, (Lucas) Paqueta – they’ll say maybe we can be a little bit more on the front foot or play a little bit better football,” Carragher said.

“But I don’t necessarily agree really. You know every supporter wants everything – you want great results, you want great football, you want your team to be tough to beat – it’s difficult to tick every box as a manager.

“I just go back to the first time he was there I think the club brought in (Manuel) Pellegrini and it went horribly wrong. And for West Ham to be in European football year after year I’m not sure it does get better than that… I say playing European football but winning a European trophy I should add. So many clubs in the Premier League would swap places with West Ham.”

West Ham fans would counter Carragher’s considered and well argued take by pointing to the likes of Aston Villa, Brighton, Spurs and Bayer Leverkusen to name just a few who are playing fantastic football while getting results.

That being said Carragher did speak out about the dour defeat at his old club Liverpool, labelling it ‘criminal and embarrassing’.
