Gianluca Scamacca could now miss the remainder of the season for West Ham, with knee surgery pencilled in.

David Moyes gave reporters an update on the 24-year-old Italian, as quoted by Football.London:

“The only news is that Gianluca Scamacca is due to have an operation on his knee tomorrow, so we will be missing him.”

Scamacca has endured a disastrous debut campaign with the Hammers since moving to the London Stadium from Sassuolo in the summer.

And now his season could be over…

Gianluca Scamacca set for knee surgery

Football.London suggest that the Hammers hitman could be set to miss the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.

That really is a massive blow for him and for West Ham of course.

The Hammers are far from safe, with relegation down to the Championship a very real possibility.

We have a genuine chance of winning the Europa Conference League as well, and our chances of doing that will decrease without Scamacca in my opinion.

Sure, the 24-year-old has struggled since moving to the London Stadium, but he is a quality player and the system deployed by Moyes has negated the Italian’s strengths.

Gianluca Scamacca undergoing knee surgery may well be the best thing for him in the long-term. However, it’s terrible news for us as a club any this moment in time.

It’s hugely frustrating that every time one of our key players suffers an injury, it ends up being a serious one. And that’s something that needs to be looked at going forward in my opinion. Whether there is a problem with our training facilities or if it’s just a case of Moyes signing players who are not physically robust enough is up for debate.
