The 23-year-old Hammers full-back has regressed badly over the past 12 months, so it was a huge surprise when he recently demanded a triple your money £60k-a-week new contract from the club.
When he burst onto the scene with West Ham four-and-a-half years ago when Manuel Pellegrini was in charge, it seemed like we had a real player on our hands.
Johnson then went from strength-to-strength when David Moyes took over, but the past 12-18 months have been a real struggle for him.
He has taken huge backward steps during that time and is currently nowhere near Moyes’s starting lineup. So what does the future hold for Ben?

Ben Johnson unhappy at West Ham
According to a report from Football Transfers, the 23-year-old could leave the London Stadium in January, after new contract talks broke down.
Johnson will be out of contract at the London Stadium in the summer of 2024, but it seems as though he could be pushing for an exit before then.
If he wants to leave I say on your way then Ben – he’s nowhere near good enough to be playing Premier League football for West Ham.
The London-born defender has been awful whenever he’s played for the Hammers this season, and it was recently suggested that he will be released in the summer.
Johnson may well be pushing to leave five months earlier though. It just remains to be seen whether there are clubs willing to pay a nominal fee for his signature.
His concentration levels, decision making and atrocious positional awareness have cost the Hammers dearly on numerous occasions over the past year or so. He’s still yet to play a single minute in the Premier League this term, so it’s obvious to see that Moyes has had enough of him.
Ben Johnson leaving West Ham in January would be the ideal outcome for all parties involved.
