David Moyes absolutely raved about West Ham United right-back Vladimir Coufal this afternoon.

West Ham boss David Moyes brought Vladimir Coufal to the London Stadium from Slavia Prague for just £5 million back in October 2020 (The Guardian).

The 31-year-old right-back has been a really solid performer for the Hammers over the past three years or so.

His current contract expires at the end of the season, but the club have the option to extend that deal by a further 12 months, and he recently admitted that he would sign a new deal with the East London outfit in an instant, if offered one.

There have been times when Coufal has struggled over the past year or so, but he can never be accused of not giving his all, and as a fanbase, we have to respect that.

At the end of the day, £5 million in this day and age is an absolute bargain, considering what the Czech Republic international has given us…

£5million very well spent by West Ham, says David Moyes

The Hammers boss addressed the media this afternoon ahead of our clash with Brentford tomorrow.

And he responded when asked what his thoughts are on Coufal, with the 31-year-old one game away from his 100th Premier League appearance for West Ham, as quoted by WHUFC.com:

“For the value of money we got Coufal for, bringing him in has been a great bit of business,” the boss added. “He has shown us very good worth. He’s nearing on 100 Premier League appearances which I think, for a player from the Czech Republic, is very good. He’s been very good too and he’s started this season for us really well.”

Vlad has been an excellent servant for the Hammers, and I think he deserves a new two-year deal.

However, the harsh truth of the matter is that he shouldn’t really be starting for us beyond the end of the season. There are already signs that he is regressing with age, certainly from a pace perspective.

Moyes needs to sign a young right-back, and a left-back for that matter, with pace, power and energy in abundance.

However, that doesn’t mean that there’s not a place for Vladimir Coufal in the West Ham squad. He’s a real character, and someone who Moyes definitely should be looking to keep around the place for another couple of years at least.
