Forget the cup because West Ham have just had a major double boost in their battle to stay in the Premier League.

Yes going out of a wide open FA Cup in the fashion West Ham did at Old Trafford stings.

With half the quarter-finalists from outside the Premier League, it presented a real chance for West Ham to end their 43-year-old major trophy drought.

Especially having been 1-0 up and guilty of wasting a series of golden chances to comfortably progress before Man United’s late burst to take the tie 3-1.

But West Ham’s key focus is remaining a top flight team themselves.

So forget the cup because West Ham have just had a major double boost in their battle to stay in the Premier League.

While the FA Cup took centre stage this evening, there were two huge league matches taking place involving West Ham’s direct relegation rivals.

And both Arsenal and Liverpool have done West Ham a massive favour this evening.

The title-chasing Gunners battered Everton 4-0 to leave them in the drop zone below West Ham and give the Toffee’s goal difference a pounding too.

Meanwhile Liverpool saw off Wolves 2-0 at Anfield.

The results now give West Ham a huge incentive for Saturday’s game at bogey team Brighton.

A draw could take the Hammers up two places to 14th depending on results elsewhere. And a win could take us above Forest into 13th just one point off 12th placed Crystal Palace.

So West Ham need to lick their wounds, dust themselves down and take advantage of tonight’s defeats for their rivals come Saturday.

Every cloud and all that…

West Ham’s relegation rivals have difficult fixtures at the weekend too. Bournemouth are away to Arsenal while Leeds are away to Chelsea.

Wolves take on Spurs and points will be dropped in the relegation battle when Southampton entertain Leicester and Forest take on Everton.
