Ex-West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini has just broken a record with La Liga side Real Betis that has stood since 1995.

The Chilean took charge of the Hammers in the summer of 2018 and embarked on a huge spending spree.

His time in East London was largely marred by poor decisions regarding his starting XI and inept tactics.

He also received heavy criticism for his failure to bring through any of the club’s talented young players.

Much was expected of Pellegrini at the London Stadium but he failed miserably in the end, and when he was relieved of his duties in December 2019, West Ham were in serious relegation trouble.

The Hammers sat inside the bottom three when David Moyes took over as manager for the second time at the London Stadium and the rest is history.

The Scot has managed to transform us into a consistent top seven team in just two-and-a-half years.

The change in performance levels and the culture in general at the London Stadium has been spectacular to witness.

But how has Manuel Pellegrini fared since leaving West Ham?

Manuel Pellegrini breaks Real Betis record

The 68-year-old took charge at the Estadio Benito Villamarín in July 2020 and guided Betis to sixth and fifth place finishes over the next two seasons.

His side now sit third in the La Liga table after five games, just three points behind league leaders Real Madrid.

Despite his obvious faults during his time as West Ham manager, Manuel Pellegrini is clearly doing an excellent job at Real Betis.

In fact, he has managed to achieve something that nobody in charge of Los Verdiblancos has done since 1995.

Pellegrini has guided his Real Betis side to four consecutive La Liga home wins, without conceding a goal in the process – a feat that was last matched by Lorenzo Serra Ferrer 27 years ago (via Opta):

You’ve got to hand it to Pellegrini – that’s quite the achievement.

At the end of the day, he was a huge failure during his time in charge of West Ham.

Manuel Pellegrini has managed to reinvent himself in charge of Real Betis though. His side are a really exciting watch and are on course to improve on last season’s fifth placed finish.

Pellegrini is obviously a very good manager but he just wasn’t the right fit for West Ham. And his excessive spending certainly didn’t end well, with hardly any of his acquisitions proving to be successful for the club, aside from Pablo Fornals and Lukasz Fabianski.

There are no hard feelings though, we wish the Chilean all the best in the future. And it will be interesting to keep an eye on how his Betis side do this season.
