West Ham United manager David Moyes has opened up on exactly what he tells Lucas Paqueta whenever he needlessly loses the ball.
David Moyes brought Lucas Paqueta to West Ham from Lyon in the summer of 2022 for around £50 million, and despite his brilliance for us, he does have a bad habit of dawdling on the ball for far too long in dangerous areas.
Listen, I am in no way criticising the 26-year-old – he has been absolutely sensational for the Hammers, especially this season.
During his time at the London Stadium, the Brazilian has bagged 10 goals and 12 assists in 66 games for West Ham (Transfermarkt).
He is absolutely crucial to the way in which we play, and is undoubtedly one of our best three players alongside Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus.
However, he does have that one part of his game that he needs to address, as mentioned earlier – when he loses the ball in dangerous areas. And Moyes has explained what he tells Lucas when that happens…

David Moyes makes Lucas Paqueta admission
The Scot was speaking to TNT Sports yesterday before our game against Manchester United kicked off at the London Stadium.
And Moyes responded when asked to share his feelings on Paqueta:
“Paqueta at times will drive you mad at times, he gives the ball away at times and I say to him, ‘good players do not give the ball away, they keep it at the right moments’. But his body strength and ability to get on the ball and get it down, he wants to take risks with his passing and at times that’s really good, and there will be other days when it doesn’t come off. He’s a really, really top player and great technically.”
Now, I love those 15 words from Moyes – ‘good players do not give the ball away, they keep it at the right moments’.
It’s so true, and if the Brazilian is going to improve, he must try to eradicate the way that he needlessly loses possession from his game.
Lucas Paqueta is such an unbelievable talent, and we have to be grateful for David Moyes bringing him to the London Stadium.
The thing is, he can get even better, And that’s a scary thought for our opponents!
