David Moyes has just sent a really clear message to young West Ham United striker Divin Mubama.
West Ham forward Divin Mubama faces an uncertain future under David Moyes at the London Stadium, after news emerged a couple of weeks ago that the teenager had refused a new contract offer from the club.
Moyes brought Mubama on in the 89th minute for the Hammers against Olympiacos on Thursday, a move that generated the largest cheer of the night from the home fans.
It’s clear that the fans was to see more of the 19-year-old playing for there first-team. He’s been given just 25 minutes action for the senior team this season (Transfermarkt).
And with the teenage hitman due to be out of contract at the London Stadium in the summer of 2024, Moyes has sent a strong message to him…

Moyes sends message to Mubama
The Scot addressed the media during his pre-match press conference yesterday’s and he made his feelings on the Mubama situation very clear indeed.
Moyes told reporters how the striker needs to sign a new deal with the Hammers, as quoted by the Independent:
“Divin was offered a contract 12 months ago but he’s the one not agreeing to sign a contract. We really like Divin, he’s an East End boy and a West Ham supporter, a great lad, we love him to bits. I feel the best thing for Divin is to sign a contract at West Ham. He’s got competition in front of him but he’s only young. If I can get him more opportunities I will do. But he’s an 18-year-old centre forward and there’s not many of them playing in the Premier League.”
Well firstly, he’s 19, not 18! Secondly, if you’re old enough you’re good enough. And thirdly, those in front of Mubama – Michail Antonio and Danny Ings – are in absolutely dreadful form right now.
Brighton gave Evan Ferguson the chance to prove himself and they’re reaping the rewards now – so why can’t Moyes do the same?
If he gave the 19-year-old a three or four game run of starts, then we would know one way or the other whether he’s good enough to be playing at the very highest level.
Moyes has made it very clear to Mubama that he should sign a new deal with West Ham, but I don’t blame the 19-year-old one little bit for biding his time. Why should he sign a new deal if Moyes isn’t going to play him?
The Scot could have sent him out on loan in the summer remember, but he kept him at the London Stadium because he apparently wanted to use him.
The thought of losing the teenager, especially to another English club, is a deeply concerning one.
Now it’s time for Moyes to keep his word and give Mubama the chance to show us all what he’s truly capable of.
