David Moyes raves about West Ham star some labelled a dud after only two appearances

Hammers boss David Moyes has raved about a West Ham star some labelled a dud after only two appearances.

West Ham beat Manchester United 2-0 thanks to a stellar second half showing from their Holy Trinity.

Once again Lucas Paqueta made the chances while Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus put them away for West Ham.

The win lifts the Hammers up to sixth in the Premier League table.

But just as notable was the clean sheet – something of a rarity for West Ham until recent victories over Freiburg and Wolves.

And the manager was keen to praise Konstantinos Mavropanos for his role in the victory over Man United.

Moyes raves about star some labelled a dud

David Moyes has raved about the West Ham star some labelled a dud after only two appearances.

After his performance in the 5-1 drubbing at Liverpool in midweek, Greek international Mavropanos was very much a scapegoat for some of the fan ire. One look at social media and fan forums made that perfectly clear.

The £17m summer signing from Stuttgart was being labelled a flop by many after an unconvincing performance at Anfield. That’s despite the overall team performance being ridiculously below par.

Some even suggested his signing was technical director Tim Steidten’s “first mistake”.

With Nayef Aguerd missing due to illness, Mavropanos was given just his third Premier League start for the Hammers.

Get him to the Greek

Alongside Kurt Zouma, the Greek dominated £72m Rasmus Hojlund into being substituted. And he then shackled the £120m rated Marcus Rashford too.

And his manager singled him out when speaking to BBC Sport after the game.

“He (Mavropanos) played very, very well today,” Moyes said.

“He’s just maybe getting used to us as well. It’s a bit like all the boys who come in from overseas – Lucas Paqueta took the best part of eight months probably to settle in last year. But now everybody can see the quality he has and what he is. Whereas Mo Kudus has come in and nearly hit the ground running right away.

“So you never know how it’s going to be. But it’s the same for Mavropanos, he just needs some games and he played very well today.”
