How Manchester United could do with a player like Eric Cantona right now, well West Ham have the next best thing in Lucas Paqueta.
That’s according to one of Man United’s greatest and a former teammate of Cantona.
West Ham were sparked into life by their Brazilian magnifico in a game of two halves as they beat Man United 2-0 at the London Stadium.
The Hammers moved up to sixth in the Premier League table – for a few hours at least – after goals from Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus put Man United to the sword.
But there was no doubting who was the star of the show – that man Paqueta.
Man United fans used to sing ‘Ooh Aah Cantona, say ooh aah Cantona’ about Eric the Red – one of the club’ finest ever players.
Another former star worthy of that title is legend Cantona’s old midfield partner Paul Scholes.
And it’s Ooh Aah Paqueta as Scholes pays the West Ham star the highest compliment with his Cantona comparison.
But it comes with a warning for West Ham. That they may have bigger clubs forming an orderly queue.
Speaking on TNT Sports 1 after the game, Scholes said ‘unit’ Paqueta reminds him of the magical Frenchman.
“He’s so impressive. He can do everything, can’t he?” Scholes said.
“The big thing that has surprised me is his physicality. The size of him, he is a right unit.
“He almost reminds me of Cantona in that way that somebody who just bounces off him.
“But to go with that, he has also got a brilliant quality. Jarrod Bowen and Kudus must be licking their lips every time he gets the ball. ‘We are going to make runs and we are going to be found by the brilliance that he produces’.
“With performances like that, I think there would be big clubs who would want him. Of course, they will.
“No disrespect to West Ham. I know that they are a big club, but when you are talking about Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barcelona, you can see him playing in those teams because the lad has real quality.”
