Hammers boss David Moyes named Craig Dawson as one player he is furious with for costing West Ham in the cup defeat to Southampton.

Moyes was visibly angry with his players after the 3-1 FA Cup exit at the hands of Southampton last night.

West Ham were beaten by a much-changed Southampton to kiss goodbye to the FA Cup for another year.

Ralph Hasenhuttl made NINE changes, leaving key players out, but the Saints still managed to beat a near full strength West Ham.

Moyes criticised his attacking players for their profligate finishing and poor decision making.

But he singled out veteran defender Dawson – many fans’s Hammer of the Year shout so far – for costing West Ham in the cup defeat.

At 1-1 in the second half, VAR adjudged that reported West Ham striker target Armando Broja had been fouled by Craig Dawson in the box and James Ward-Prowse made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Many West Ham fans felt the decision was nothing short of a disgrace with the officials failing to spot what looked like a blatant foul on Dawson by Broja in the build-up while the penalty decision itself was debatable.

An angry West Ham boss did not care about that, though.

Moyes instead pointed out that the entire incident would have been avoided had Dawson defended the situation properly in the first place (whufc.com).

“I’ve not seen it again, but Daws should never have let Broja get anywhere near a chance to get in on goal,” an agitated Moyes told West Ham TV after the game.

“And that’s where it starts from you know. You make a mistake or you’re in the wrong position you can get caught out, so (you get punished).

“And that’s what we were.”

It may seem harsh on Dawson who has been so good for West Ham this season.

But Moyes clearly expects his veteran defender to lead by example and he will know that the 32-year-old is big enough and tough enough to take the criticism on board without letting it affect his performances.

There were plenty others to point the finger at for the defeat. But Dawson’s error proved to be the pivotal point in the match.
