West Ham United boss David Moyes has explained the thinking behind his treatment of Said Benrahma last season.

It is fair to say Benrahma’s debut season at West Ham was a touch underwhelming.

Benrahma was something of a bit-part player under Moyes who elected to ease the £25 million signing in gently after his move to West Ham after the season had started in October last year.

The signing of the Algerian really caught the imagination of West Ham’s fans.

Some Hammers fans disagreed with Moyes’s taskmaster approach to managing Benrahma

But Moyes was strict with Benrahma.

The Scot has demanded he do more defensively, be more efficient with the ball and warned he must stop trying to force things.

Some West Ham fans feel Moyes’s treatment of Benrahma was harsh.

And many believed the taskmaster approach was perhaps not conducive to getting the best out of the club’s clearly talented new star.

Benrahma eventually notched his first goal for the club in a draw at Brighton during the run-in.

But he very much played second fiddle to Jesse Lingard in the second half of the campaign.

With Lingard looking likely to remain at Manchester United – and with a full pre-season behind him during which he has looked extremely sharp – West Ham fans are hoping to see Benrahma blossom this term.

“My message for Said has been to improve,” Moyes told Sky Sports.

“Not all players come to the Premier League and are an instant hit. I had a strange feeling that there would be a big expectation on Said which maybe he wasn’t ready for. I feel he had to take his time, sit back and observe a bit.

“But he’s started very well, and I hope he continues in this form as he’s starting to give us something a little bit different.

“It’s good as he’s now stepping up and I hope he can show it in the games to come.”
