Contradictory Chris Sutton has laid into West Ham fans and says some of them drive him potty over David Moyes.

David Moyes looked like the cat who got the cream after West Ham’s memorable 3-1 win over Arsenal in midweek.

The Hammers are through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, sit ninth in the Premier League – three points off the European spots – and top of their Europa League group at the halfway stage.

So who could blame Moyes for brilliantly shutting down a reporter who was keen to focus on the three defeats last week that had seen unrest bubble to the surface?

Despite being one of the most experienced managers in the game, even the thick-skinned Scot will have been surprised by the speed at which dark clouds began to gather over the Hammers in the last seven days.

The poor run did put a dampener on West Ham’s fine start to the new season.

But it was the manner of the performances – the style and approach – which drew as much criticism from supporters, a common complaint aimed at Moyes during difficult periods of his tenure.

The first half against a much-changed Arsenal was a similarly risk averse approach. But the second half showing was much more like what West Ham fans want to see.

And it proved West Ham do have it in them to take the game to the top sides, especially at home.

After that result outsiders could be forgiven for wondering ‘what was all the fuss about’.

A BBC pundit is among that number. But he has tied himself in knots with his assessment of the Hammers ahead of the clash with Brentford.

‘The usual rumblings from the same old people’

Speaking on BBC Sport ahead of West Ham’s match with the Bees, Sutton says some West Ham fans are ungrateful and fickle when it comes to Moyes and have no right to moan about the recent poor form.

Yet he has still predicted a defeat for the Hammers at Brentford which, if proved correct, would mean Moyes’ side have won just one of their last seven league games.

“Whenever West Ham lose a couple of games, you hear the usual rumblings from the same old people, asking if manager David Moyes should still be in the job,” Sutton said.

“It drives me potty. Moyes has done brilliantly and a spell of poor form doesn’t change that.

“Brentford went through a bit of a sticky patch themselves recently, with four defeats in seven games, but they are flying at the moment. The Bees got a big win against Chelsea last week and, as I’ve said before, they are so well balanced and well organised.

“I was tempted to go for another draw here, but I am actually going to go for Brentford to edge it. They beat the Hammers 2-0 home and away in the league last year, so I have picked the same scoreline again.”
