Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has admitted that he was stunned by something that the West Ham United players did just before kick-off on Saturday.

West Ham held Newcastle to a draw at St James’ Park last weekend, and arguably should have actually won the game.

Considering our current circumstances though, a point was a more than welcome result at the end of the day. The challenge for David Moyes and his players now is to pick up a few wins on the bounce.

West Ham have a game against Chelsea at the London Stadium on Saturday, and after our last three results, many Hammers fans fancy us to get something from the game.

If we play anything like we did against Newcastle, we should be just fine. There was something that our players did before the match that baffled Callum Wilson though…

Callum Wilson admits he was baffled by ‘bizarre’ West Ham

The Toon hitman was speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast about Newcastle’s draw with the Hammers on Saturday.

And Wilson admitted that he was stunned when West Ham chose to swap ends after the coin toss:

“These guys come up here, we’re at kick off now all set and ready. And the referee goes: ‘change ends’. I’m like what are these guys on, trying to play mind games. But for us it was one of them, we were just like: ‘did you not watch what Leicester did?’ They tried to change end, but next minute it’s 2-0, game over. We started like a house on fire because we’re shooting into the Gallowgate End which is the end we prefer to shoot in so I just thought it was bizarre they tried to turn us around. So the more the merrier, if teams want to do that now and try and play mind games! It was probably Michail’s stupid idea!”

It’s impossible to say whether the change worked in our favour or not. Sure, Newcastle striker Callum Wilson scored early doors against West Ham.

However, had we not changed ends, the Magpies would have been shooting toward their favoured Gallowgate end in the second-half.

Sometimes those things work out for you and sometimes they don’t. Quite frankly I’m baffled myself that Wilson was so rattled by the Hammers players swapping ends in the first place!
