Bournemouth star Chris Mepham has made an utterly bizarre West Ham claim which is completely delusional after the Hammers win.

West Ham took an almighty step towards Premier League safety with a wonderful 4-0 win in a relegation six-pointer at Bournemouth.

It was a Sunday stroll by the seaside for the Hammers as goals from Michail Antonio, Lucas Paqueta, Declan Rice and Pablo Fornals put the seal on a brilliant week for West Ham.

The victory lifted West Ham up to 13th in the table, six points clear of the bottom three – which is essentially seven points given David Moyes’ side’s vastly superior goal difference.

To a man West Ham were superb and showed no signs of tiredness from the roaring comebacks against Arsenal and Gent in the days prior.

Sunday stroll by the seaside for rejuvenated Hammers

The 4-0 scoreline was fully deserved. And the only complaint Moyes had after the game was that the margin of victory could have been even greater.

Maxwel Cornet had a goal ruled out for a very marginal offside while Flynn Downes went close and West Ham wasted one or two other presentable opportunities.

But it seems one player involved in the match has a completely different take.

Bournemouth star Chris Mepham has made an utterly bizarre West Ham claim that is completely delusional after the Hammers win.

The Cherries defender says Bournemouth were in ‘complete control’ against West Ham and were simply undone by a set-piece team.

“Weird game really,” Mepham told Sky Sports.

“I felt like we probably felt in complete control, had a lot of the ball, started the game well and then just set pieces killed us.

“It’s something we’ve put a lot of work into and we’ve been aware we’re not good enough dealing with them set pieces and today showed again – two balls in the box and two goals and you’ve got a mountain to climb against a very stubborn West Ham team.

“We need to do more to make sure we’re not in that position but I felt like that was the difference today. I don’t think in general play there was much in it either way. Just shows the importance of set pieces at this level.”

Sorry what? The only thing that is “weird” is Mepham’s take on the match.

Bournemouth may have had more possession – but that was because West Ham wanted them to as they hit the naive hosts on the break time and again.

A new definition of ‘complete control’

This is one of the worst opposition takes you will see all season.

No wonder Bournemouth lost if they have come away thinking they had any control whatsoever in that match.

They posed little to no threat to West Ham at all during the game. And it was one of West Ham’s most comfortable wins of the last two or three years.

West Ham played some lovely football and were 1-0 up after five minutes then 2-0 up inside 13 minutes. So how Mepham thinks his side had a ‘good start’ to the game is also baffling.

West Ham were leading 3-0 at half-time and won the second half 1-0 also. If that’s ‘complete control’ then I’d hate to see Bournemouth on a bad day.
