David Moyes says Flynn Downes ‘opened up his ankle’ during AEK Larnaca vs West Ham and requires a couple of stitches.

West Ham United won the match comfortably out in Cyprus last night, and took a two-goal advantage back to the London Stadium.

Moyes would have been delighted with the result in the end but he wouldn’t have been over the moon with the performance of his West Ham team in general.

However, one man who did look very good indeed was Flynn Downes.

A lot of the 24-year-old’s fine work goes under the radar and the same can be said about his display for the Hammers against AEK Larnaca last night.

It seems as though it wasn’t all good news for Downes and West Ham last night though…

Moyes addressed the media after the match and gave an injury update on some of his players.

And the Scot admitted that Downes suffered a nasty gash on his ankle, as quoted by Football.London:

“He opened his ankle up a bit, he’s probably going to get a couple of stitches on his ankle, the bit when he went down. I could’ve taken him off, I was a bit worried when he got the booking so I thought I could make that change but they told me he was already suspended for next week so I thought I’d take my chances and hope he sees it out.”

That’s a real shame for Downes because I think that he might well have done enough last night to force his way into the side against Aston Villa on Sunday.

The 24-year-old has made a really slow start to life in East London since joining the Hammers in the summer, with Moyes choosing to ease him into the side.

However, during the AEK Larnaca vs West Ham clash last night it was obvious to see that Downes is more than good enough to be playing regularly for us.
