After West Ham exit, player admits he’s much happier, says he has more freedom on the pitch

One player in particular seems to have found a completely new lease of life after leaving West Ham United.

West Ham boss David Moyes only brought one player into the London Stadium in the January transfer window – Kalvin Phillips, but we moved three on out of the club.

The Hammers allowed Said Benrahma, Pablo Fornals and Thilo Kehrer all to leave, after the trio failed to make any kind of impact with the first-team this season.

None of those three players did anything of note to help out the team this term, so you could argue that getting rid of them was the correct decision.

However, the other side of the coin is that Moyes’s poor squad management meant that they all felt ostracised and were extremely undercooked physically, whenever they were given a chance.

It also has to be said that the West Ham boss definitely put the shackles on Benrahma and Fornals, and didn’t allow them to express themselves, nor did he give them the freedom that creative players usually need.

After West Ham exit, player admits he’s much happier

Benrahma scored his first goal for Lyon last night during their 2-1 win away at Metz last night.

And the Algeria international explained how much happier he is now that he has more freedom to express himself on the pitch, when speaking to Amazon Prime France:

“It’s a goal that will give me a lot of confidence. Already, after the goal, I felt a lot better, I dared more, and I had more freedom. It’s worth continuing like this, I have a team who trusts me, I have a coach who trusts me, the entire club trusts me, and I try to go into the field.”

It doesn’t surprise me one little bit that Benrahma is enjoying life with Lyon – him and Moyes were never a match made in heaven were they!

I fully expect the Algerian to leave West Ham permanently in the summer, whether that be to join Lyon or another club.

We never got to see him at this very best in East London, and Moyes has to take some of the responsibility for that in my opinion.
