After David Moyes makes Lucas Paqueta comments, where on earth was that energy with Said Benrahma?

West Ham star Lucas Paqueta has just started to find his feet in England, and David Moyes praised him to the hilt yesterday.

However, why didn’t the Scot show that same attitude towards Said Benrahma during the Algerian’s early days at the London Stadium.

Paqueta, 25, joined the Hammers from Lyon in the summer of 2022 for around £51 million (The Times). Meanwhile, Benrahma, 27, moved to the London Stadium on loan in October 2020 before making his move a permanent one just a few months later for around £30 million (The Athletic).

They are both very similar players in the sense that they always try to make things happen for their team inside the final third.

However, Moyes’s treatment of the two players has been very different…

David Moyes takes completely different approach to Lucas Paqueta than the one he did with Said Benrahma

The Scot spoke to reporters yesterday, and highlighted how the Brazilian’s risk taking in the final third is what has led to more goals and assists for him recently, as quoted by Football.London:

“I think we’re beginning to see someone who we brought to assist and score goals. He’s looked much more settled. Still at times I think, don’t do so much, and we’re trying to show him that, but he’s got it in his blood. He always wants to make the hard pass, which is a good thing because it probably leads to a goal. We need to see it more but today I thought he was really, really good, exceptionally good and played a big part in a lot of things we did.”

Now, when Benrahma burst onto the scene for West Ham away at Leeds a couple of years ago, Moyes criticised him for his ambitious, and expressive approach to the game.

I just don’t understand why it is seemingly one rule for Paqueta but another for Benrahma.

I’m not saying that all players need to be treated the same. Some need an arm around the shoulder whilst others need a kick up the backside – I get that.

However, the worst thing you can do to a creative forward player is put the shackles on them – it makes them totally ineffective and dents their confidence.

David Moyes did exactly that with Said Benrahma, but has taken the complete opposite approach to Said Benrahma. I just find that rather strange.
