23-year-old admits he can’t wait to return to West Ham and prove his quality to David Moyes

The 2023 summer transfer window was an extremely busy one for West Ham United manager David Moyes.

West Ham boss David Moyes lost his club captain Declan Rice to Arsenal in a £105 million deal, and there were numerous other high profile exits from the London Stadium.

Gianluca Scamacca, Manuel Lanzini and Flynn Downes all left the Hammers, whilst Moyes brought in a handful of exceptional talents including Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez.

On the whole, it seems like we did pretty well out of the summer transfer window business. West Ham are currently sitting in seventh spot in the Premier League table and have a Europa League quarter-final clash with Bayer Leverkusen to look forward to next month.

The problem for Moyes is that he faces a big summer rebuild at the London Stadium once again in a few month’s time, with as many as 12 West Ham players being linked with leaving.

However, there will be one man returning to the club it seems, and most Hammers fans would have completely forgotten that he even existed!

Player wants to return to West Ham to play under David Moyes

Whilst Moyes will already be lining up his summer transfer targets, there is one player who is set to return to the London Stadium, and he hasn’t played a game for us yet.

In the summer of 2023, the Scot brought five new players into the club.

One of the players Moyes signed was was Andy Irving, before loaning him back to SK Austria Klagenfurt for the season.

There are doubts from the fans that the Scotsman will be good enough to hold down a first-team place with the Hammers.

However, the 23-year-old reckons that he has indeed got a future at the London Stadium, when speaking exclusively to Edinburgh News:

“I heard about the possibility (of a potential move to West Ham) from my agents about 10 days before the window shut. It was a lot to take in having games to focus on too, but of course it’s something every kid dreams about. I was buzzing, as were my family. Travelling to London was a bit chaotic. It was during the time when UK control towers were down so flying to Brussels and then driving with my agent to London wasn’t exactly the easiest – but it was definitely worth it, absolutely. I believe that I can go to West Ham and show my quality. It’s a challenge I’m very excited for. I understand the level that I’m going to and it’s up to me to show that I can play at that level.”

Whilst it’s nice to hear Irving’s optimism, I really don’t envisage a scenario whereby he’ll be playing regularly for us.

It’s worth noting that back in the summer, West Ham entered into an agreement to become an affiliate club SK Austria Klagenfurt.

It’s probably more likely that he will remain in Austria with his current loan club.

David Moyes has plenty of quality in his midfield engine room at West Ham and unfortunately for Irving, I really don’t see his future being with us.
