Two West Ham players were atrocious vs FCSB, the problem is they play in the same position

Two West Ham players were absolutely atrocious vs FCSB, and the problem is they play in the same position.

Ben Johnson has regressed badly this season, and the same can be said of Vladimir Coufal, although the Czech’s decline has been longer in the making.

And the fact that both players’ best position is right-back is a real concern.

Thilo Kehrer can play there of course but still, David Moyes must be targeting the addition of a top-class right-back in the January transfer window.

Johnson and Coufal were worryingly bad tonight against FCSB – essentially a side that would struggle in League One.

And Moyes surely now knows where he has to strengthen his squad when the window opens…

David Moyes lined up with a completely second string side tonight (UEFA). Oliver Scarles and Divin Mubama were handed starts, but it was two senior figures who looked completely lost out there.

Johnson started the game as the right-sided centre-back alongside Nayef Aguerd and Angelo Ogbonna.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Coufal played as a right wing-back.

Both players were absolutely dreadful. Johnson just wasn’t sharp enough in possession, and his constant dallying on the ball put us under pressure on numerous occasions.

At the same time, Coufal was extremely profligate in possession, and never looked comfortable on the ball.

It may well be a confidence issue for both players, but something needs to change and fast.

In fairness to Johnson, he did record a fantastic assist, but his performance in general really was very poor indeed.

The Englishman and the Czech Republic international have a long way to go if they are to rediscover their best form.

Whether Johnson and Coufal have what it takes to bounce back remains to be seen.
