Joe Cole says 23-year-old has been an outstanding find for West Ham after UEFA Europa Conference League performances

Joe Cole says Flynn Downes has been an outstanding find for West Ham, after his UEFA Europa Conference League performances this season.

The 23-year-old was actually one of the senior players on the pitch for the Hammers against FCSB last night.

Signed for £14 million from Swansea in the summer (Wales Online), Downes has already made his mark in the West Ham side.

Downes is an archetypal defensive midfielder. He excels when breaking up the opposition’s play and moving the ball on to his more technically gifted teammates.

The 23-year-old is tenacious, aggressive and has a really impressive engine on him. He also has an exceptional range of passing at his disposal.

Strangely, David Moyes has been playing him in a more advanced role in the Premier League recently.

It’s clear to see that he’s best suited when playing at the base of central midfield though.

And he was in sensational form once again last night…

The ex-Hammer was on the panel for BT Sport last night, and he was blown away by the 23-year-old’s display.

Downes has been outstanding. He’s been the bright spark for West Ham in the whole campaign. He’s proven that he’s ready to go. Outstanding find for West Ham.

Cole is right, Downes has proven to be an exceptional addition for the Hammers this season.

The 23-year-old is obviously ready to be playing regular Premier League football for West Ham and personally, I think he should be starting ahead of Tomas Soucek.

Flynn Downes has been the standout performer for West Ham in Europe this season.

Now the challenge for him will be to carry that form on into the new year after the World Cup break.
