West Ham United v Arsenal - Premier League

David Moyes' 81st minute decision during West Ham United's 2-1 defeat to Arsenal was truly baffling

David Moyes brought Andriy Yarmolenko on in the 81st minute during West Ham United’s defeat to Arsenal today.

There was nothing wrong with the decision to bring the 32-year-old on. He has had huge impacts in games when coming on as a second-half substitute of late after all.

It was Moyes’s decision to bring Said Benrahma off rather than Pablo Fornals that was truly mind-boggling though.

West Ham lost 2-1 to Arsenal at the London Stadium this afternoon. It was a result that has made a top six finish now a really tall order.

Your Club's SURPRISE Star This Season

It’s such a shame that we have stalled so badly since the turn of the year. The fact that Moyes didn’t sign anybody in the January transfer window was inexcusable. And West Ham are now really paying the price.

The Scot has been making some mistakes during games of late as well. And he made an absolutely shocking decision during our defeat to the Gunners today…

West Ham defeat to Arsenal summed up by 81st minute Moyes decision

The Hammers boss brought Yarmolenko on in place of Benrahma with around 10 minutes still to play.

The fact that he didn’t take Fornals off instead though was baffling. The Spaniard put in one of his worst performances of the season today.

Benrahma, meanwhile, was the only attacker we had on the pitch who tried to run at Arsenal’s backline. Sure, he didn’t always pull off what he tried, but at least he had the intent.

Meanwhile, Fornals toiled in the final third. He was sloppy in possession and every time he had the ball he either lost it or just passed backwards.

The former Villarreal man was totally ineffective today. This isn’t a dig at him – he’s been brilliant for West Ham over the past year or so. But he deserves to be criticised for his performance this afternoon.

And actually, the decision from Moyes to take Benrahma off rather than Fornals during West Ham United’s defeat to Arsenal deserves even more criticism.
