£14 million West Ham ace Flynn Downes was absolutely different gravy vs Liverpool at Anfield tonight, in what was his first Premier League start.

David Moyes handed the 23-year-old his first ever Premier League start for the Hammers in one of the most hostile environments in top flight football – Anfield.

Downes was more than deserving of his chance, he has been absolutely brilliant recently and has been pushing Moyes for a Premier League start.

Signed for £14 million from Swansea in the summer (Wales Online), the 23-year-old midfielder has been slowly eased into action by Moyes.

He has been hugely impressive in the Europa Conference League, but has only been given a few minutes here and there in the league.

That all changed tonight When Moyes threw him in from the start against Liverpool. And the ex-Swansea man will be leaving Merseyside with his head held high.

He should be hugely proud of his performance at Anfield…

Downes was so cool, calm and composed in the middle of the park for us tonight.

What a Premier League debut it was for the young man.

Downes is on an entirely different level to Tomas Soucek in my opinion, when it comes to technical ability on the ball.

The way that the ex-Swansea ace takes the ball on the back foot and opens up his body provides so much more fluidly to our play through the middle of the park.

He also enables West Ham to move the ball quicker in transition than when Soucek has possession.

Strangely, Downes was taken off with around 15 minutes still to play. I think Moyes should have brought Soucek off instead.

The £14 million West Ham ace was different gravy vs Liverpool in my opinion. And Downes’ performance tonight should give him huge confidence for the rest of the season.
