It is a huge game for both sides…but for very different reasons.

West Ham are flying high in fifth spot in the table whilst the Magpies are languishing near the bottom three, that’s in spite of having won their last three league games.

Newcastle’s fortunes have really changed since Eddie Howe took over at St James’ Park towards the end of last year.

The Toon made some strong January additions and they are now a completely different prospect to the team that really struggled under Steve Bruce.

They could still be in for a really tough afternoon at the London Stadium though…

Paul Merson makes prediction for West Ham vs Newcastle clash

The Toon will be without key players Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson through injury.

Meanwhile, the Hammers are only without Angelo Ogbonna. Kurt Zouma is a slight doubt having missed last weekend’s game against Leicester.

Merson spoke to Sportskeeda and backed West Ham to win the game against Newcastle fairly comfortably:

“Four weeks ago, this game wouldn’t have been much of a contest as Newcastle United were in a dreadful run of form. They’ve now won three games on the trot and climbed out of the relegation zone. That said, I still fancy West Ham to win as I don’t think Newcastle will be able to live with the threat posed by Michail Antonio upfront. Additionally, Kieran Trippier is a massive loss for them. He’s been a fantastic addition to the squad as well as the dressing room and has scored two massively important goals for Newcastle since signing for the club in January. The Magpies have been in good form, but this is a hard game for them.”

Prediction: West Ham United 2-0 Newcastle United

Considering the Toon’s fine recent form, that is somewhat of a surprise prediction from Merson.

We will take that all day long.

The Hammers players will have to be on their very best form if they are to earn a much-needed three points against Newcastle.

Howe has plenty of match-winners at his disposal and if we’re not on it, we will get beaten, it’s as simple as that.

Nothing less than three points will do in the race for the fourth and final Champions League spot this season.

Moyes will ensure that his players are 100 per cent up for it tomorrow. Let’s hope that they put in a performance that is simply too hard for the Newcastle players to live with.
