Official England announcement means the pressure is really on Jarrod Bowen now

Jarrod Bowen has had a massive touch by being named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad after the announcement this afternoon.

The 25-year-old West Ham star made his debut for England in June and went on to earn four caps for the Three Lions.

Bowen was absolutely terrific for the Hammers last season, bagging 18 goals and 13 assists in 51 games in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Reports emerged earlier this week that Bowen may miss out on Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming Nations League games against Italy and Germany.

However, after the England squad announcement today, the 25-year-old has escaped the chop. And considering Southgate’s recent promises of only picking players based on current form, Bowen can think himself very lucky indeed…

Pressure now on Jarrod Bowen after England squad announcement

The West Ham winger has started the 2022/23 really slowly. In fact, he has been fairly poor for David Moyes’s side.

Bowen is still yet to register either a goal or an assist in six Premier League games for the Hammers so far this term.

The ex-Hull City ace has seemed really sluggish and well off the pace, certainly in the Premier League.

As a result, many predicted that the 25-year-old might miss out on Southgate’s squad when the England announcement was made today.

That obviously didn’t happen, but the pressure is now right on Bowen.

He quite simply has to perform consistently for West Ham and England over the course of the next couple of months if he is to be on the plane out to Qatar in November.

The 25-year-old needs to start racking up the goals and assists again. Gareth Southgate is blessed with a plethora of talented attacking options. And if Bowen takes his foot off the gas at all, he could well be usurped by the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.

The England squad announcement this afternoon would have been a timely boost for Bowen. Now he needs to react.
