Declan Rice could one day be England captain according to Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate.
The 23-year-old West Ham midfielder has been in sensational form for club and country over the past 18 months or so.
Dec has reached an entirely new level this season and has worn the Hammers captain’s armband with distinction.
But could Declan Rice be a future England captain as well?
Harry Kane is currently captain of England but when he is out injured who is set to take the armband?
There are obviously plenty of experienced options, but maybe, just maybe, Declan Rice could be named England captain at some point in the not too distant future.
Declan Rice England captain claim made by Gareth Southgate
The 23-year-old West Ham ace is undoubtedly the best and most important player that David Moyes has at his disposal at the London Stadium.
And with every month that passes, he is becomming more and more important for the England national team as well.
So much so that Gareth Southgate has backed Declan Rice to one day be England captain, as quoted by the Mirror:
“It is noticeable that we were looking at two possible teams for these games and we now have more and more club captains actually involved in the fray. He is right amongst that despite his age. What I have seen this season is the confidence that he has gained from his experience last summer. I think he had a huge impact on the game when he came on. A really mature performance, strong, breaks the game up so well, but now has more confidence to drive with the ball and bring it forward as well. Without a doubt he has all the attributes to be a captain.”
That really is a bold shout from someone who is a notoriously pragmatic, cautious and risk averse manager.
Southgate is spot on though.
He could hand Declan Rice the England captain’s armband tomorrow and it would not faze the West Ham midfielder one little bit.
The 23-year-old is already one of the very best players in world football. Those involved with West Ham have known this for quite some time. It seems as though everyone else is beginning to catch on as well now though.
And should Southgate name Rice as captain whenever Harry Kane doesn’t play, it will be huge recognition of just how far the Hammers ace has come over the past couple of years.
