The Hammers will be taking part in the competition next season after finishing sixth with the club’s best ever Premier League points haul.

Karma for Manchester clubs after lack of integrity cost West Ham during Premier League run-in

And some Hammers fans will not forgive or forget Manchester City and Manchester United resting players for games against West Ham’s rivals for a top four spot in the run-in.

There was a bitter irony when it came to the European finals as injuries ended up costing both Manchester clubs dear as Man United lost to Villarreal and City were beaten by Chelsea.

Some West Ham fans might see it as karma, even if they would have preferred City to beat London rivals Chelsea.

An interesting fact has emerged from the competition West Ham fans will be enjoying next season, though.

Villarreal join West Ham and three other clubs now share something rare in common

After Villarreal’s win they joined West Ham in a very select club of teams who have won a European trophy but never the top division in their own country.

West Ham, Parma, Bayer Leverkusen, Real Zaragoza and now Villarreal are the only clubs in Europe who have tasted glory in Europe but not been champions of their country.

West Ham of course won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1965 at Wembley.

The Hammers beat German 1860 Munich 2-0 that day and one year later West Ham’s favourite son Bobby Moore would lift the World Cup after beating the Germans at the same stadium.

Hammers could face one of the members of their select club in Europa League next season

West Ham could come face to face with one of those select clubs next season as Bayer Leverkusen will be in the Europa League too.

Moyes has worked wonders at West Ham.

But it is a stretch to think the Hammers might exit the select group – which will undoubtedly make a great quiz question now – by winning the Premier League any time soon.

Let’s hope the Irons can add further European success to the record, though, by really having a go in the Europa League.
