West Ham United player ratings v Newcastle United after the big Premier League clash at St James’ Park today.
Newcastle played host to West Ham in the Premier League this afternoon, and Hammers News have complied our player ratings from the game.
David Moyes would have been delighted with the way that his side battled back into the game having conceded inside the first five minutes.
However, his decision to bring Kalvin Phillips on in place of Michail Antonio after 68 minutes cost us dearly in the end, because we just sat back and allowed Newcastle to come onto us.
Antonio got our equaliser before Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen put us 2 and then 3-1 up.
In spite of our dangerous counter-attacking play, we lost 4-3 in the end. There were some great performances from Lucas Paqueta and Konstantinos Mavropanos, so the defeat really hurt today.
So how did we rank all of Moyes’s players this afternoon?

West Ham player ratings v Newcastle
Alphonse Areola – 6.5
Average from the Frenchman today. He went off at half-time to be replaced by Fabianski after picking up an injury.
Vladimir Coufal – 3
The 31-year-old right-back gave away an early penalty with a really clumsy challenge and was given a torrid afternoon by Anthony Gordon down our right hand flank all afternoon.
Konstantinos Mavropanos – 8.5
The big Greek centre-back put in a truly exceptional performance and was an absolute rock at the back for us. His intervention when Alexander Isak had the goal at his mercy inside the first-half was one of the best clearances I’ve seen all season long.
Kurt Zouma – 7
A solid performance at the back from our captain. He looked far more comfortable than he has done over the past couple of months.
Emerson Palmieri – 6.5
The Italian was OK on the whole today, but nowhere near his best. That said, he defended decently, and that’s what he’s there for at the end of the day.
James Ward Prowse – 6
The 29-year-old put in a largely unnoticeable display and if truth be told, he was pretty poor.
Tomas Soucek – 6.5
The Czech Republic international was solid defensively, especially aerially, but he didn’t do much else.
Lucas Paqueta – 9

The Brazilian star was at his very best against the Magpies today. He chalked up an assist, and his quick thinking was the reason why we scored our second goal. Paqueta absolutely ran the show at St James’ Park this afternoon.
Mohammed Kudus – 9
Wow! What a performance from our Ghanaian star. He scored our second goal and made our third against the Toon today. What a stunning player he is.
Jarrod Bowen – 9
The 27-year-old just put in top-class performances week in, week out doesn’t he. Bowen bagged an assist and scored our third goal against the Toon. He’s reached a completely new level this season hasn’t he.
Michail Antonio – 9
The Jamaica international caused the Newcastle defenders all sorts of problems inside the first-half, and scored the all important equaliser for us. He was a menace in the second-half as well until he was taken off in the 68th minute.
Subs:
Lukasz Fabianski – 6
Conceded three goals but in fairness to him, he couldn’t do too much about any of them.
Kalvin Phillips – 5
Poor again from Kalvin. Sure, he was unlucky to give away the penalty but he really should have cleared the ball quicker. A terrible, terrible start to life at the London Stadium for the 28-year-old.
Danny Ings – NA
