West Ham fans will be all too familiar with the problem that Declan Rice is causing for the England national side.

Rice has been sensational for West Ham and England over the past two or three years.

The last few games have been a real struggle for the Three Lions and the 23-year-old though.

Rice issued a bold rallying cry to the England fans just a few days ago, ahead of there 2022 World Cup out in Qatar this winter.

In spite of that, the England fans are still worried, and it’s little wonder as to why. Gareth Southgate’s side have been truly woeful over the past six fixtures. Three losses and three defeats in those games tell us all we need to know about the current state of affairs.

We believe that plenty of players are out of form, that is obvious.

One player in particular who is causing an issue is the Hammers skipper.

The West Ham fans will be all too familiar with the problem Declan Rice is causing for England.

That’s not to say that he’s been terrible for England – there are players who have been so much worse than him. The problem is that Rice is supposed to be playing in a role that is vitally important at international level. And over the past year or so, he seems to have forgotten what has made him such a brilliant player…

The Hammers have regressed badly over the past year or so.

In my opinion, one of the main reasons that we aren’t performing to the levels that we were in the first half of last season is Declan Rice’s change in playing style.

During the 2020/21 season, Tomas Soucek was deployed as a box-to-box midfielder, but was often found in advanced positions.

Meanwhile, Rice, 23, sat in front of the back four and provided a shield for our defenders.

There aren’t any better than Rice at intercepting the opposition’s play.

The 23-year-old played the same role for England, allowing the more attacking players to get on the ball and flourish.

For some reason though, at the start of last season, Rice decided that he wanted to evolve into more of a box-to-box midfielder and be someone who makes a real impact in the final third.

West Ham fans will be all too familiar with problem Declan Rice is causing for England because the real issue is that he doesn’t provide the goals or assists to justify the loss of defensive solidarity that he used to provide for his teams.

England and West Ham just aren’t as solid as they were two years ago in my opinion. And the stats are there to back that up.

Problems start at the back for Declan Rice, England and West Ham

The Three Lions have conceded eight goals in their last three games. That just isn’t good enough at the very highest level on international football.

Meanwhile, West Ham scored more and conceded less in the 2020/21 season that we did last term.

Dec told the official England Twitter account how he and his teammates are desperate to turn things around:

Sometimes though, the problems being caused are extremely simple to fix, and Rice’s positional play is one that should be staring him, Southgate and Moyes squarely in the face.

The experiment of converting Rice into more of an attack-minded central midfielder isn’t working for either his club or country. It’s time that Gareth Southgate and David Moyes have a word with Dec and instruct him to start doing what he is so good at again.

Let’s hope that he reverts back to his old self sooner rather than later, for the good of the Hammers and the Three Lions.
